Brown, Griffin & Payne

As the three artists in this collaboration live some way apart, it was decided to make this a feature of the work. Using the postal system, Griffin, Payne & Brown sent a “manuscript” to each of the other two. This could take the form of writing, drawing, collage, stitch, painting, found objects or a mixture of any of the above.

A palimpsest is a manuscript rubbed out or written over again and again, either to obliterate the previous meaning or to augment it. This was what each artist did with the works they received through the post, adding to, tearing up, writing over and doing what they would with each piece before posting it on in turn.
